GM APELL for Mining
APELL is a strategic program that provides detailed guidelines for the development and implementation of highly effective, integrated, and well-practiced emergency response plans in local communities. The website is part of the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics website. It also has many useful links and a section targeted at the mining industry.
GM BAT for Management of Tailings and Waste Rock
The ‘Reference Document on Best Available Techniques for Management of Tailings and Waste-Rock in Mining Activities’ (EC 2004) covers activities related to tailings and waste-rock management of ores that have the potential for a significant environmental impact. In particular the work sought out activities that can be considered as examples of good practice.

This guidance manual also was developed to give direction to individuals reviewing remining applications and associated BMP plans.
GM Environmental Aspects of P and Potash Mining
Fertilizers are a key factor in sustaining the world's agricultural output. This publication concerns the provision of raw materials for two important mineral fertilizers, phosphate and potash. This report on the environmental aspects of phosphate and potash mining is the fifth in a series published jointly by the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). 2001
GM Measures for investigation of fugitive methane
The ‘Technical measures for the investigation and mitigation of fugitive methane hazards in areas of coal mining’ by the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, 2001, outline testing and evaluation protocols for methane in wells, dwellings and soils near coal mines and recommends when action is prudent to prevent or mitigate methane accumulation.
GM Role of Fin.Institutions in Mineral Development
The purpose of this UNEP background paper (The Role of Financial Institutions in Sustainable Mineral Development)is to chart the investment process in the mining industry (from early exploration to mine closure and land reclamation) and to identify the key stakeholders at each stage as well as their role in shaping the environmental and social side of mining projects.
GM The International Cyanide Management Code
The Code is a voluntary initiative for the gold mining industry and the producers and transporters of the cyanide used in gold mining (International Cyanide Management Institute, 2005). The risks posed by the various forms of cyanide are dependent on the specific species and concentration. Information regarding the different chemical forms of cyanide is found at www.cyanidecode.org/library/cyanide facts/cyanide chemistry. For implementation guidance, visit the link attached.
GM The role of coal as energy source

GM The UNEP Berlin Guidelines
The first edition of Environmental Guidelines for Mining Operations (Berlin I) was published in 1994, as a useful outcome to the 1991 Berlin Round Table on Mining and the Environment organized by the United Nations and the German Foundation for International Development. Since the publication of the first edition of the Guidelines, continuing changes have occurred within the mining sector - particularly in the evolution of legal, fiscal and regulatory policies, accompanying the trend of liberalization and privatization of the industry. The second edition of the Guidelines (Berlin II) reflects these changes and looks at them in the context of developments in more formal legislation.
The Berlin Guidelines address: mining and sustainable development; regulatory frameworks; environmental management; voluntary undertakings; and community consultation and development; as applied to all stages of a mining operation comprising: exploration; operation; decommissioning; and closure and rehabilitation; and include a section on small-scale and artisanal mining.
