CITES
The 1961 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), in force since 1975, is one of the earlier international environmental agreements. Under this trade agreement, each country is supposed to establish its own system to control movement of wild life exports and imports. Species are separated into three classes according to the degree to which they are endangered.
BPEM
The Best Practice Environmental Management (BPEM) in Mining program is a world-renowned partnership between the mining industry, interested stakeholders and the Australian Government. It aims to help all sectors of the minerals industry – minerals, coal, oil and gas – to protect the environment and to reduce the impact of minerals production. Since the program began in 1994, the Australian Government has worked with industry partners to produce 24 booklets on a range of topics, from community consultation to water management and cleaner production. The booklets present concise, practical information on how to achieve environmental management best practice in the minerals industry anywhere in the world. ACMER
Australian Centre for Mining Environmental Research (ACMER) (now University of Queensland: Sustainable Mineral Institute – SMI) was established as a joint industry and research institution initiative. A major focus of its activities is mine closure which is considered as a whole-of-mine-life process which typically results in tenement relinquishment. The Centre pursues its role through research, advisory services and facilitation of stakeholder forums.
Copper Development Centre
Copper Development Centre is the peak body for the copper industry in Australia, representing some of the country’s most infl uential companies in mining, manufacturing, production, and recycling.
ECI
European Copper Institute (ECI) and its members are committed to strengthening and expanding copper usage in Europe. On behalf of its members, ECI aims to strengthen public awareness of copper’s value to society and its role in the environment, based on scientific research.
